Texas A&M University Galveston – Health Fair 11/10/2015
At least a dozen people received packets of cancer information, two ladies asked specifically about breast self exams and took D’Feet’s “shower hanger” cards with words and pictures giving explicit “how to” details, numerous people stopped to feel D’Feet’s “bead” necklaces to learn about how early detection of small lumps gives them a much higher survival rate than just chancing upon a large lump, other folks took a water or piece of fruit, and (the best) a man stopped for a water and laughingly said that he would never have to worry about breast cancer.
When I mentioned that 5% of breast cancers occur in men, he immediately stopped laughing and said, “What?!” When I offered him the “men’s” sheet from our standard packet of information, he demanded the rest of the sheets. He wanted more information! Two other men with breast cancer in their families were aware of their risks for the disease and wanted information packets. One TAMUG staff lady mentioned that she was struggling to pay for her mammograms but was hoping that The Rose (a Houston organization) would help her and, after hearing about D’Feet’s mammogram assistance program for Galveston County women, she brightened up and made sure that D’Feet’s contact information was on the handouts.
Laura Patterson, a D’Feet volunteer and a breast cancer survivor, lends a helping hand at our booth at theTexas A&M University in Galveston!
